Mercedes-Benz South Africa is launching the new CLA-Class here in Mzansi within the next two weeks. The CLA is based on the new A-Class platform and the only real difference between the two is that the CLA has a boot and the A-Class is a hatchback. If the CLA is your thing then you’d better take out that old cheque book and do something, otherwise you have a very long wait ahead of you.
From our information, the CLA has a waiting list as long as Naomi Campbell’s legs. Fact is, if you want one you’ll have to buy a demo model, because the earliest you will get a brand new one is October 2014. That’s right folks, there’s a year-long waiting list on the CLA!
South Africa is said to be getting four CLA models in the vein of CLA 180, CLA 200, CLA 220 CDI and CLA 45 AMG. Being the baseline model, the CLA 180 will of course be the cheapest, that word used here quite loosely. Pricing starts at R383 000 for that model, which has a 1.6-litre turbo engine making 90kW and 200Nm of torque. Then there’s the CLA 200 with the same engine, but on 115kW and 250Nm. The CLA 220 CDI is a direct injection turbo diesel worth 125kW and 350Nm of torque. It’s claimed to return about 4.3 litres per 100km.
Lastly the CLA 45 AMG has the exact same mechanics as the A 45 AMG, which means it uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine to produce 265kW and 450Nm of torque, has a claimed acceleration of 4.7 seconds and top speed of 250km/h. CLA 45 AMG features a 7-speed double clutch gearbox and 4Matic all-wheel-drive (AWD).
Well, we’ve also managed to get some indicative prices for the CLA. Our sources are not 100% reliable so don’t hold these against us, should they be off. Nonetheless we’ll see the CLA at the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show in NASREC next week.
