Toyota is reportedly ending its relationship with diesel engines in the European market, according to a report. While the company has not been the biggest supplier of diesel-powered vehicles in that market anyway, it has played a notable role in the past. Should this situation turn out to be true, it could spell the end of diesel-powered Toyota vehicles here in Mzansi as well.

While such a ban would most likely affect only passenger vehicles – meaning the likes of Hilux, Quantum and Hino would be exempted – it means a range of new cars would not be carried with such engines anymore, including the Corolla. So where will the drop in C02 emissions come from then, if not from diesel? Toyota is more focused on hybrids and fuel-cells, and will fairly soon, also get into the electric vehicle game in a much bigger way than it has been so far.
