One of its segment’s prettiest offerings, the Peugeot 508, has now been reincarnated as a fastback coupe. In fact, Peugeot says the most direct competitor would be the Audi A5 Sportback. We obviously don’t know about the car’s “premiumness” and quality, but they have certainly nailed the design. These French have been top of the game with design for some years now. Pity that has not helped it increase sales in Mzansi.

The main step forward by Peugeot in terms of design is the fastback nature of the 508, which gives it that sporty look at the rear. Windows are frameless, adding to that sporty demeanour. But it also offers a “liftback” style that literally lifts both the boot lid and the rear window when opening the boot. This is more practical for loading – boot space is now 485 litres – and is also quite stylish and modern. The 508 is 4.75 metres long, 1.4m tall and has a wheelbase of 2.75m.

Engines on offer, all of which will come standard with an 8-speed automatic except one, include two petrols and three diesels. The petrols make 132kW and 166kW, while the diesels produce 96kW (6-speed manual), 118kW and 132kW. Peugeot is clearly not interested in killing diesel.
