A rumour coming out of Japan suggests that Lexus is ditching the GS sedan. The GS is Lexus’s large executive sedan model that competes against the likes of Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. According to these reports, the car just has not been selling and Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda has finally approved its culling.

Of course sales are the main determining factor in these things, driven by market demand and so on. Last year Lexus sold 677 615 cars across the world where it operates. Most of these were SUVs. Lately buyers are shifting more and more into the SUV and crossover world, and large sedans are finding less and less favour. GS was never really a contender in its space to start off with, even though the current version is just as good as its German competitors. The next-generation model was due out in 2018 but it seems that will no longer happen.
