INFINITI TAKING AIM AT BMW M AND AUDI RS AGAIN

Infiniti has reportedly made it clear that at some point, not far into the future, the brand will definitely aim its guns at the likes of Audi RS and BMW’s M products. According to an AutoExpress article, the company’s big boss Roland Krueger has been marshaling his troops towards the performance side of life. Once they are there, the affected cars will be badged S.

So the new Infiniti Q50 S with a 3.0-litre V6 twin turbo “VR” engine is good for some 298kW and 475Nm, which is admittedly short of the BMW M3’s 317kW but sounds like a good first-time effort. Remember Infiniti had the Eau Rouge development prototype car that nearly made it to production? That thing produced 412kW and 600Nm from Nissan GT-R’s 3.8-litre V6. Therefore there is still scope, if the demand can justify the asking price.

It may appear that the Q50 S and its next sibling, the Q60 S are underpowered next to their targeted rivals, but keep in mind that this will be the Hong Kong-based Japanese company’s first attempt at this segment. “Given the resources we have it is the right thing to do,” Krueger is quoted as saying. “We will establish these models first and then take the next step. We are aware what other brands (Audi and BMW) are doing.”
