Earlier this year Ford and Volkswagen signed a memorandum of understanding that will see the two rivals develop a range of new commercial vehicles together. At the time IN4RIDE speculated that one of these would be a joint Ranger/ Amarok bakkie (pickup). Well it appears our speculation was correct, because Volkswagen has confirmed it will co-develop the next-generation Amarok with Ford.

What that means is that just as the current Ranger shares many of its underpinnings with the Mazda BT-50 – because they were both developed by the same people when Ford still co-owned Mazda, the Ranger and Amarok will essentially be the same car underneath. Interesting that just when Ford puts 2.0-litre biturbo diesel engines into its Rangers – something Amarok has been doing since inception, this announcement happens. So it’s a given then we’ll see these being shared in the upcoming bakkies. We could also see them sharing the new 10-speed automatic found in the new Ranger.
