BMW i8 fans are in for a treat this year as they will be able to welcome two new additions to the growing BMW i range. Available immediately is the new BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Black Edition, which will be followed in December by an i8 Protonic Frozen Yellow Edition. Both models are limited edition, with only 12 of the former and three of the latter going on sale.

What stands out about the i8 Protonic Frozen Black Edition is the exterior paint finish that is in a frozen grey metallic as well as 20 inch W-Spoke style BMW i light alloy wheels. The door sills feature an integrated aluminium plate with “Protonic Frozen Black Edition” lettering. Inside you’ll see things like floor mats with black leather piping and yellow highlights, sports seats with BMW i8 logo embossed on the headrest and grey seat belts. The gear lever and central control unit are in black ceramic. The rest remains pretty much the same.

What also remains the same is the i8 plug-in hybrid powertrain which consists of a 1.5-litre turbo engine with 170kW and an electric motor making 96kW. Together the total system output is 266kW and peak torque is 570Nm, which results in a claimed 0 – 100km/h time of 4.4 seconds. Ever since the i8 was launched in Mzansi in 2015, a total of 228 units have been sold. That number should go up in 2018 when the i8 Roadster (slahla) goes on sale.
