2018 BMW 330e iPerformance 1

The new BMW 330e iPerformance plug-in hybrid is now available at the nearest Mzansi dealership with a basic price tag of R767 400. This is the first time BMW has offered a plug-in hybrid in this segment, and in fact, the car has become the first in its segment overall. Plug-in hybrids you’ll remember, are based on two powertrain solutions; a petrol engine and an electric motor, both of which drive the wheels at specific periods during journeys.

Powered primarily by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol turbo engine with 135kW and 290Nm of torque. Combined with the 65kW and 250Nm electric motor, the total system output goes up to 185kW and 420Nm, which is apparently enough to propel the car from 0 – 100km/h in just 6.1 seconds, reaching a top end of some 225km/h. All of this is accessed via an 8-speed Steptronic automatic, which sends it to the rear wheels. BMW reckons it will return on average, 2.1 litres per 100km.

According to BMW’s own test figures, the 330e iPerformance will travel up to 40km on battery power only, with the ability to reach 120km/h at the same time (in MAX eDrive mode). Mind you, we reckon at this stage the battery will be on life support. Nevertheless it is possible. Those 40km are useful for people living within sprawling metro areas that drive less than 20km one way a day.

The rest of the car, apart from the boot capacity of 370 litres, extra power filling cap on the front left fender, is pretty much the same as the normal 3 Series. That means BMW iDrive with ConnectedDrive and satellite navigation, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, dual zone climate control and others.
