While a BMW X8 has been rumoured for some time now – see here and here – the strongest indication that it may actually be on its way has come courtesy of the fanboys at BMW Blog. According to a post on that forum, the X8 has been given the green light and will appear on the streets around 2020.

The X8 as a concept is not hard to imagine, given that the X1, X3 and X5 all have coupe versions of themselves in the form of X2, X4 and X6 respectively. It follows then, that an X8 would be a coupe version of the new X7. But apparently a small difference will be felt; the X8 will be more about luxury than shape. In other words, it may have a slanted rear roofline sure, but it won’t be as obvious as in the X6 for example.

The target vehicle is basically the new Range Rover SV Coupe, which is basically as 3-door Range Rover. Therefore expect all the opulence found in the X7, plus some more, including perhaps a 4-seat configuration, with the rear centre console reserved for storage and gadgets, similar to the 760Li. As for powertrains, for now we can only speculate, but we believe there will be a 4.4-litre V8 in at least two power configurations, as well as a plug-in hybrid based on the 3.0-litre turbocharged straight six.
