LOTUS CONFIRMS ALL-NEW SUV BY 2019

Lotus Cars has confirmed that it will produce an SUV by the year 2019. The vehicle – a first for Lotus concepts don’t count – is being touted as the lightest, fastest and best-handling vehicle in its class. Mind you this is a class that includes the likes of Porsche Macan and BMW X4. Big words again from Lotus. Hopefully this time, unlike in the days of former CEO Danny Bahar, they actually deliver.

Bahar’s replacement Jean-Marc Gales told Automotive News Europe as saying the Lotus SUV will espouse all the values that Lotus is known for, while at the same time creating a new niche vehicle like none at all in its segment. By this it is understood he meant it will sit lower and wider than the competition, with a slanted rear roofline but without the usually-compromised rear headroom.

Engines were not mentioned, an area Lotus hasn’t been very strong in. Regardless, there are options out there, not least of all from Toyota who currently supplies the Malaysian-owned British brand with its 1.8-litre 4-cylinder unit for the Elise and Exige, as well as the 3.5-litre V6 used in the Evora. There will be an optional all-wheel-drive (AWD) model included in the range.
