RALPH GILLES NAMED FCA DESIGN HEAD

Ralph Gilles has been appointed Head of Design and member of the FCA Group Executive Council (GEC), Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has announced. The GEC is FCA’s highest management-level decision-making body. FCA owns such brands as Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari. With this move Gilles becomes one of only two black people to head up the global design department of a major automaker. The other guy is veteran Ed Welburn, the Head of Design at General Motors, and a good friend of IN4RIDE.

After joining Chrysler in 1992, the 45 year-old Gilles rose through the ranks to become CEO – Motorsports, President and CEO – SRT Brand and CEO – Dodge Brand for FCA US along the way, while simultaneously heading the design department in that country. His new appointment will be met with glee by those of us who enjoy the look of current Jeeps and Chryslers. It’s also a sign that he may be in for even bigger assignments, given that on top of his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Industrial Design qualification, he also holds an MBA from Michigan State University in the US.
