MCLAREN SALES ON THE UP

A record 1 648 new McLarens were sold in 2014, according to the company. This represents a 21% increase over the year 2013. While 1 648 doesn’t look that impressive in a world where a fellow sports carmaker (in most ways they still are) like Porsche sells just under 170 000 cars a year, remember that McLaren sells cars that cost at least R4 million each. At least.

And of those, they sold and/ or delivered 1 400 units, made up of the new 650S and the discontinued MP4 12C. The rest were 248 deliveries of the P1 hybrid hypercar. The P1 mind you, costs over R21 million a pop. All sold out. To be exact, McLaren will only build 375 P1s, making them more exclusive than the fabled Bugatti Veyron.

This year McLaren will unveil its latest baby, an “entry-level” or as the company puts it, “most attainable model yet”, namely the Sports Series. Sports Series denotes cars that will be pitched specifically against the 383kW Porsche 911 Turbo, so if you were hoping for an affordable sub-300kW McLaren don’t look there. That being the case we can then expect a few derivatives to be spawned, including a coupe, convertible, an even more powerful model as well as a hard-core track-biased version.
