The long list of 2015 European Car of the Year candidates has been released. The Euro COTY is a good indicator of what to expect when the time comes for World Car of the Year. This list of 33 new cars will be whittled down to just 7 in December, with the winner being announced at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show in March.
The reigning 2014 European Car of the Year is the Peugeot 308 (definitely coming to Mzansi in 2015), which was preceded by the Volkswagen Golf 7 in 2013. Interestingly and unlike in Mzansi, Euro COTY has not been dominated by the usual Germans. In fact, BMW has never won this prize since its inception in 1964. Mercedes-Benz won it once in 1974, and Audi twice in 1973 and 1983. The major forces in this competition are Fiat (9 wins), Renault (6) and Ford (5).
