Chevrolet has confirmed the power output figures of its new Corvette Z06 and boy does it sound fantastic! Previously when the car was unveiled, only preliminary figures were communicated. Now everything has been confirmed and we can thus celebrate “the most powerful production car ever from General Motors and one of a few production cars available in the United States that delivers more than 600 horsepower.”

So we have, underneath the bonnet, a new 6.2-litre V8 motor to start off with. Add to that a 1.7-litre Eaton supercharger that can spin at up to 20 000rpm. Maximum power is confirmed at 485kW at 6 400rpm and 881Nm of torque at 3 600rpm. The same engine is used by both the coupe and Convertible.

Stunningly at idle the engine already delivers 619Nm of this 881Nm, going up to 847Nm by 2 800rpm. What they normally call “instantaneous acceleration” seems quite inevitable with the Z06 then. “Torque is the pulling power of an engine and the LT4’s abundance of it at every rpm in the engine’s speed range helps the 2015 Corvette Z06 accelerate quicker and respond nearly instantaneously,” said Jordan Lee, chief engineer for Small Block engines. “It’s the very definition of power on demand.”

Driving the big rear wheels is a choice between a 6-speed manual gearbox or a new 8-speed automatic that’s build in Toledo, Ohio. Chevrolet says the Z06 is one of only a few such supercars that give buyers the choice of either manual or auto. They also say it shifts as quickly as double-clutch equivalents.

Sales of the new 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 will start during Q4 of 2014 in North America. General Motors South Africa has said there are no plans to bring this car here as they only build left-hand-drive versions. Such a pity because Ford will start selling the all-new Mustang locally in 2015.
