MCLAREN SHARES 650S PERFORMANCE DETAILS CLOSE TO GENEVA DEBUT

McLaren unveiling its third line of sports car at the 2014 Geneva International Motor Show. The new 650S (650 horse power, Sport) fits in between the existing MP4-12C and the upcoming, yet already sold-out P1 hybrid hypercar. McLaren says it will be shown in both coupe and Spider (convertible) form.

Thankfully we have performance statistics and boy do they look serious! The engine is the same as the one used by both 12C and P1, and it’s the 3.8-litre V8 twin turbo. In this application it delivers a frothy 478kW and 678Nm of torque, coupled with a 7-speed SSG double clutch transmission. Power goes to the 20-inch rear wheels with Pirelli P Zero Corsa 305/30 R20 tyres.

For its sins, the 650S is capable of hurtling off from 0 – 100km/h in just 3 seconds flat, 0 – 100km/h in 8.4 seconds, 0 – 300km/h in 25.4 seconds and the quarter mile distance in 10.5 seconds at a terminal velocity of 224km/h. Top speed is pegged at 333km/h. Incredibly an average fuel consumption of just 11.7 litres per 100km is claimed, alongside C02 emissions of 275g/km!

We should see the new McLaren 650S show up in Mzansi during the course of the year, at a price that’s expected to hover around the R4 million mark.
