Renault has not only redesigned the new upcoming Twingo sub-compact city car, but they’ve actually rethought the whole concept of what a city car actually is. New Twingo boasts a number of firsts not only for itself and Renault, but for the entire segment where it plays.

First off the car moves from having two doors to adding an extra two, making it a four-door at the very least, or a five-door depending on how you like counting your entry doors. This will make it quite flexible in a market segment littered by 3-door competitors.

Secondly Renault has moved the engine from the front to the back. That’s right. Twingo is now rear-engined, just like the ancient Volkswagen Beetle, Kombi and Porsche 911. Such a move has done the car a number of good things, including improving its turning circle by quite a bit, and a very roomy interior.

Inspired by both its predecessor and the old Renault 5, new Twingo comes in four colours, namely light blue, white, yellow and red. In fact, Renault 5 Turbo itself was rear-engined. While Renault is making us wait for the 2014 Geneva International Motor Show to tell us exactly what sort of motor(s) is(are) at the back there, it’s a foregone conclusion that turbos can be counted upon. That should include the 66kW 900cc unit also found in the new Clio.

We expect the new Twingo to make its South African debut around Q4 this year. Whether an RS model will be made is still not confirmed.
