A completely undisguised all-new Volkswagen Golf R has been snapped in Europe. The car was parked alongside an Arteon, unattended, in what looks like a mountain lodge parking lot. Not exactly spotless either, which means it had been driven perhaps enthusiastically just before parking. Not that I blame the driver; this is Golf’s highest representative performance car after all. And yes, the Golf R is still scheduled to arrive in Mzansi in 2021 based on the new Golf 8 platform.

The main differentiators from the Golf GTI which has already been unveiled is the different front bumper, which looks much stronger and less playful. The Golf R seems to sit lower from the side profile, with a colour-coded rear roof cap and bigger wheels.

The back end sees typical four oval exhaust tailpipes, a wind diffuser, and LED lights. Whoever took these pics was also able to sneak through the window and take an R sports seat as well as the sports steering wheel with contrasting blue stitching.

Under the bonnet we know is a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that delivers around 245kW of power to all four wheels via a DSG ‘box and 4Motion all-wheel-drive (AWD). We don’t yet know what kind of performance it will deliver but it should achieve a 0 – 100km/h sprint time of about 4.5 seconds and a limited top speed of 250km/h.
