Toyota has unveiled the updated Hilux, which should be coming to Mzansi either later this year or in early 2021. Hilux is the best-selling vehicle of any type in this country and has been for decades now. These updates are aimed at keeping it at the top of the pile not only in its segment but also going into others where buyers are looking for both utility and leisure.

The front end design has been changed to reflect more robustness, with a new front grille look, new front bumper, new headlights design, LED daytime running lights are also different. Toyota has also changed the look of the rear LED lights cluster and bumper, while adding a new 18-inch alloy wheel design (country dependent). Additionally three new exterior colours will be available, namely Oxide Bronze metallic, Dark Blue and Emotional Red II.

Work was also done in the interior to make life a bit better for the occupants. A new 20.32cm infotainment screen runs all sorts of things, including radio, music, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite navigation and a 9-speaker JBL Premium sound system (market dependent).

Big news on the powertrain front is the upgraded 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine which until now has been producing 130kW and 450Nm. The new motor goes up to 150kW and 500Nm, thus matching one particular key rival called Ford Ranger in its segment. That power and torque can be accessed via either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, and will go to either two or all four wheels, depending on the specification.
