Volkswagen South Africa will soon be playing a significant role in the electric car market. The company recently announced that it will be launching the new ID.4 full-electric SUV which we last saw dressed like an Opel. It will be the first VW-badged EV to be sold in Mzansi and will be followed by the ID.3 hatch at some point. We are looking forward to experiencing what it can offer for the company’s customers.

With the 2020 Geneva Motor Show now cancelled, ID.4 has been shown still as a concept but one that is almost ready for production. In these official pictures we can see it covered in blue camouflage while showing pretty much everything we need to see. Like the headlights cluster, which is of course in LED and is connected through an LED strip that runs below the bonnet. There are no air intakes on the upper front grille, indicating the absence of a petrol/ diesel engine. The side profile shows a slanting, coupe-like roofline, four entry doors, large wheels and some black bumper cladding. At the back we see LED rear lights also connected by a single strip, more black bumper cladding and no exhaust tailpipes.

Volkswagen has not yet been drawn into what lies beneath the ID.4 as far as the powertrain is concerned, but we know it is built on the MEB platform and will be offered as two or all-wheel-drive models. Some of those models could even offer a full-charge range of up to 500km.
