Mzansi is probably only getting the brand new Volkswagen Golf R in 2021. This would make sense because the new Golf GTI only arrives here later this year. So while we wait for the Golf R it is pleasing that a spy photographer has seen it fit to gift all of us these lovely undisguised pictures of the car as it went about doing its normal snow and ice testing.

Of course the Golf R features Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, which explains why the car looks quite comfortable – albeit in winter tyres – on the white stuff. The GTI would struggle here. Lookswise we do see the Mk8 on the front end and the sides, while the rear end features a large roof spoiler, a black diffuser and four exhaust tailpipes.

Word is that the new Golf R will keep its 2.0-litre turbo format but add some horses under the bonnet. The latest talk is about maximum power of around 240kW going to all four wheels via an exclusive automatic transmission. We expect the car to deliver a 0 – 100km/h time of around 4.5 seconds and top speed of 250km/h in real life.
