Great Wall Motors (GWM) is now ready to enter a new era in the world of bakkie/ pick up production. The new P Series Pickup has been revealed in China and will be available for sale in Mzansi in 2020. GWM is saying some great things about its new double cab bakkie, using words like “aiming to be ranked amongst the world’s top three pickup trucks available.” We can’t wait to check it out.

There is great ambition for the project, with the company aiming to take it globally. The plan is to sell 200 000 units by the end of 2020, and rack up to 3 million units by 2025. This is highly ambitious, especially considering how the Ford F series is the best-selling double-cab bakkie on Earth, with about 900 000 units annually. Nevertheless if there’s one thing about the Chinese, it’s their can-do attitude.

Some of the features of the P Series are a 2.0-litre turbo engine (presumably the same one from the Haval H9), a four-wheel-drive system, ESP, a 360-degree view camera system, Lane Departure Warning system and an automatic gearbox.

The interior is quite similar to the H9, with lots of leather applications as well as aluminium touch plastics. A touch screen infotainment system sits at the centre of the dashboard, just above the automatic gear lever. Behind that is an electromagnetic handbrake, replacing the old handbrake lever.
