What is surely the design basis for the next-generation BMW 4 Series has made its way to the public eye via the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. The new BMW Concept 4 broke cover earlier today and points to a clear and concise direction towards which the new 4 Series will go. At least as far as looks are concerned. That car has already been spied anyway, and these pics are more or less in line with what we have seen.

A two-door coupe by its nature, the Concept 4 is a sports car with some serious sex appeal. Of course it wouldn’t be a modern BMW without some controversy, which will be courtesy of that massive, vertical front grille. Those who know the BMW heritage will immediately recognise it from the cars of the 1930s and 1940s, especially the original 328, as well as the 3.0 CSi from the 1960s.

The side profile shows some clear contours, especially on the lower third, and the rear end (from C-pillar) where the usual Hofmeister kink appears. The rear lights cluster is L-shaped as per what the BMW doctor ordered, made up of a single fibre optic light. The line from the roof down to the boot gives the spoiler a ramp-like look and feel.

BMW did not supply any powertrain details but we know the production 4 Series will carry more or less the same engines and transmissions as the 3 Series. That means 2.0-litre turbos, 3.0-litre turbos and possibly a plug-in hybrid. Only some of these will come to Mzansi though. And yes, there will be an M4 with at least 350kW based on this design.
