BMW’s Vision M NEXT is the company’s concept of what a next-generation BMW M flagship car would look like. A production version of the car will go into market in the near future, with much of the features and looks of this concept hopefully in place. Several distinguishing features make the M NEXT and outstanding proposition in the super car league.

One of these is the gullwing door design which is already in existence in the i8 series. “The BMW Vision M NEXT provides a glimpse into the future of sporty driving,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “Where the BMW Vision iNEXT illustrated how autonomous driving is set to transform life on board our vehicles, the BMW Vision M NEXT demonstrates how state-of-the-art technology can also make the experience of driving yourself purer and more emotionally engaging. In both models, the focus is firmly on the people inside. Design and technology make the ‘EASE’ and ‘BOOST’ experiences more natural and more intense.”

Power is sourced from a plug-in hybrid system that uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine as well as electric drives. Total system output is 441kW and is able to rush from 0 – 100km/h in just 3 seconds, reaching a top speed of 300km/h. In a nutshell, as far as performance is concerned anyway, this is the performance people expected from the i8 but never received. BMW says it will be able to travel 100km in all-electric mode.

A really interesting feature of the M NEXT is its ability give the driver a choice between driving (BOOST mode) and being driven by the car itself (EASE). For now we don’t know exactly what level of autonomous driving EASE mode will bring, but we believe it will be at least Level 4.
