Recently the head of Mercedes-AMG hinted that a new SL roadster was on the cards. And now we can see some evidence of that. Don’t be fooled by the big E-Class body; this ain’t no 4-door sedan. No ma’am. This here is the next-generation SL roadster.

But why is it looking this way? Well because this is a test mule, which means the car’s development is still in its early stages. It is not wearing its own body yet, but will do so fairly soon, now that it’s getting on the road. We obviously cannot tell much because this is the incorrect body, but we can deduce that the new SL will be longer than ever before. The likelihood is that it will retain its folding hard top philosophy and carry some of the latest Mercedes-Benz tech, including MBUX infotainment systems.

As far as the underbelly, it can be confidently expected that at least two engines will find their way into the SL, including the new 3.0-litre twin turbo straight six capable of over 300kW, as well as the thunderous 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 making well over 400kW these days. The main question could perhaps be; will the SL drop rear-wheel-drive and adopt Mercedes-Benz’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive (AWD) instead? Let’s wait and see.
