The Mercedes-Benz Concept GLB unveiled at Auto Shanghai is an answer to a question that the brand had been asking itself for a while; is there space between the sportier GLA and the bigger GLC? So we ask ourselves; is this a good answer to that question then? Well, since this is still just a concept we can say yes, so far so good.

While the GLB is currently in concept form, there is no doubt that it will come to life as a full production car, as evidenced by some of our spy activities around the car. Estimated date of arrival? Sometime in 2020, but hopefully earlier. The car is 4.6 metres long, 1.89m wide and 1.9m tall. Very importantly it has a 2.8m wheelbase, which allows for a third row of seats. That’s correct. The GLB will be a 7-seater, something quite unusual in this segment.

For the show Mercedes-Benz used a 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine in the GLB that gives out 165kW and 350Nm of torque. The motor is mated to an 8G-Tronic double clutch automatic transmission that sends power and torque to all four wheels in varying degrees, using the 4Matic all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.
