Fans of the Opel brand – and there are thousands in Mzansi – will be treated very well come 2019. That’s because several models will become available at local dealerships, thus strengthening the brand’s presence in our market. In fact, up to seven models and updates will be on the menu, covering a number of segments.

The Opel Corsa, which was once one of the country’s leading small hatches, will get a mild performance version in the GSi. Said GSi brings back a strong badge to the scene and will be powered by a 1.4-litre turbo engine with 110kW of power and Recaro seats among other features. Corsa will also be the poster boy for the 120th year celebration of Opel as a brand by offering a 120Y Special Edition model with things like rear view camera, special stitching and Jet Black cloth trim among others.

The Astra 1.6T Sport will get an automatic option, something we always advocate for when you live in congested cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Added specification will include items like alloy sport pedals, OPC-line sport pack for the exterior and others. The Astra lineup will also see improvements, including the IntelliLink infotainment system for the entry-level 1.0T manual. Lovers of the Crossland X (built in Spain), will be pleased to learn that it will now come with a 1.6-litre turbo diesel worth 68kW. At the same time the Grandland X will get higher specification, such as bigger 18-inch wheels, roof rails and more.

Opel Combo

Last but not least, two Opel vehicles will enter the commercial space. The first is the Combo, a panel van powered by the 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine. It has a 600kg payload and nice features like a sliding door, air con and Bluetooth. The second is the new Vivaro. Currently we don’t know if Opel SA will only offer the people mover or panel van version. Or both. We’ll find out closer to its introduction in about a year.
