You might remember the Hyundai Santa Cruz concept car from about three years ago. Actually it was a concept bakkie, a double cab. At the time we speculated that it might go into for production. Turns out we were right. Hyundai bigwigs have given the bakkie approval for launch in 2020. With Mzansi as one of the world’s most enthusiastic bakkie markets, it stands to reason that Hyundai would seriously consider us for this.

Now whether the Santa Cruz will retain its concept name or not is still unclear. We don’t see anything wrong with it, given that its big SUV is called the Santa Fe. It might be a good family name. We do wonder though, if the Hyundai will be related to any other bakkie on the market, in the same way that the Mercedes-Benz X-Class and Renault Alaskan are based on the Nissan Navara. Regardless, Hyundai knows how to make utility vehicles.

Speculation is that Santa Cruz will not come in single cab form; only double cab, in order to compete in the burgeoning outdoor lifestyle market. Engines will probably be sourced from the existing menu, including 2.0-litre, 2.5-litre and 3.0-litre ones among others.
