You are looking at what is rumoured to be the most powerful series-production Audi of all time. Yes, the all-new, next-generation Audi RS 7 Sportback – expected to hit European streets before the year ends – should be something of a marvel. As we previously reported, RS 7 will come in two different flavours this time around; one “normal” and another with plug-in hybrid technology.

The normal car is expected to use the company’s 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine to full effect by delivering something akin to 480kW of power. That’s already some way ahead of the competition. Meanwhile, the mad scientists back at the lab concocted something else, something extra, something sinister. It will reportedly use the same V8 engine but add at least one electric motor to take up total system power output to about 520kW. This should make it good for a sub-3.5 second 0 – 100km/h time.

The A7 is quite understated as a whole. But this hi-performance version is even more so, considering its status in the range. Subtle front end enhancements, wider wheel arches, two large oval exhaust tailpipes and a retractable rear spoiler seem to be the only standout exterior features worth a mention. On the other hand, buyers of these R2 million-plus cars are not too attracted to “loud” exteriors, although they would not mind a loud soundtrack from those pipes.
