FERRARI PORTOFINO LAUNCHED IN MZANSI

Scuderia South Africa, the local custodians of the Ferrari brand, launched the new Ferrari Portofino to a wowed media at their Johannesburg dealership. Portofino is named after one of Italy’s villages in the Riviera and replaces the divisive California. Although launched, it will only become available for sale around September this year.

The two-door coupe-convertible features a hard top roof that opens and closes electronically in 14 seconds, even while in motion at the low speed of 20km/h. When this happens the powerplant can be heard as it shrills and thrills the every building and hill nearby. Said powerplant is headed by a 3.9-litre turbo V8 that dishes out 441kW of power at a revvy 7 500rpm, as well as a heavy 760Nm of torque between 3 000 and 5 250rpm.

It all goes to the rear wheels – 10J x 20” wheels on 285/35 ZR20 tyres – via the tested company F1 dual-clutch 7-speed transmission and the third generation electronic rear differential (E-Diff3). Ferrari says the Portofino will hit 100km/h from standstill in 3.5 seconds and only stop accelerating at something higher than 320km/h. With an 80 litre fuel tank, Ferrari reckons it will average 10.7 litres per 100km in fuel consumption.

The Portofino’s interior is typical Ferrari, with a flat-bottomed, multifunction steering wheel, 25.9cm infotainment touch screen and a sports leather interior. Rear seat legroom has apparently been improved – the car is bigger than the California at 4.6 metres long, 1.9m wide, 1.3m tall and with a 2.67m wheelbase. Boot space is 292 litres large.

“We are thrilled to introduce our latest addition to the Prancing horse family in South Africa. The Portofino is a benchmark in its segment and surpasses all expectations of a V8 grand tourer. We believe this exceptionally versatile drop-top embodies the perfect combination of design excellence, supreme performance and unmatched technology”, concludes Mervyn Eagles, CEO of Scuderia South Africa.
