Geely, new majority owners of the Lotus car brand, reckons there is scope to expand the automaker’s portfolio, including beyond the current traditional sphere of small sports cars. The purchase of a 51% majority stake was announced in May this year and brought fresh excitement to a company that many believe is grossly underperforming. Geely also owns 100% of Volvo Cars and a 49% of Proton.

With its Cayenne and Panamera lines, Porsche is the poster child of all sports car manufacturers who have or wish to transcend the basic label and create sustainable businesses from other segments. Geely is also keen to explore what other kinds of Lotus can be made. We know there is a Lotus SUV planned for 2019, and hopefully it will still go ahead under the new owners. Opportunities lie all over the place, including sports sedans, hatches, big and small SUVs etc. Last December Lotus reported its first profit in 40 years.
