2018 RENAULT MEGANE RS BREAKS INTO FRANKFURT

RENAULT MEGANE IV R.S. (BFB RS) - PHASE 1

Renault Sport unveiled the new and more powerful Mégane Renault Sport (RS) at the 2017 Frankfurt International Motor Show. As one of the leaders of the family hot hatch brigade, plenty of fans of the genre have been waiting with bated breath for this and now it has finally happened. New Mégane RS is coming out with several innovations, either segment-leading or new for the model itself.

First and most obvious of these is the five-door setup. Previous Mégane RS have come only with three doors (two passenger entry, one boot), and that has probably given the car limited appeal when it comes to family people who love the hot hatch genre but could not get over the practicality parameters. It will also allow it to compete more directly with its natural nemesis, the Volkswagen GTI.

Second is the introduction of an automatic gearbox, another first for Mégane RS. Obviously the main rival has been selling autos since generation 5 and Renault probably realised that increasingly buyers are opting for automatics, even in this segment. In this instance it’s the trusted company 6-speed EDC which we sincerely hope is quicker than it currently is in the Clio RS Lux.

Paired to it is a Renault Nissan Alliance unit displacing 1.8-litre and fitted with a new turbocharger. It produces 206kW of power and 390Nm of torque between 2 400rpm and 5 000rpm. Renault claims a 6.9 litres per 100km average fuel consumption. For now there is no stated 0 – 100km/h time.

While it remains a front-wheel-drive (FWD) format, there is something added called “4CONTROL four-wheel steering” which also turns the rear wheels slightly to improve handling in both low and high speed driving, a first for this segment of car. The Cup chassis, which will develop 221kW and become available late in 2018, will feature a Torsen limited slip differential. The five driving modes available to suit any particular mood are; Comfort, Normal, Sport, Race (ESC goes off completely here) and Perso.
