2016 Audi A4 sedan South Africa media launch Xabiso Dlungwana 3

The current Audi A4, launched here in Mzansi in February 2016, is apparently getting ready for a major upgrade. Europe received its allocation in late 2015, meaning an update/ facelift will only appear there in late 2018. Word is, this will be quite a substantial makeover because the A4 has not set the sales charts alight as Audi had expected it would.

According to a source in Europe, the major changes will be on the design itself, the interior and engines. Exterior design will include a brand new front grille taken from the next-generation A6 and A7, new front aprons, headlights and a different rear end. Most of the interior technology will stay but some notable improvements will take place in the area of comfort and general features.

As far as engines are concerned, power is about to be increased. While we obviously don’t know exactly why, we believe the surge of Mercedes-Benz to leapfrog Audi from third spot to number one in sales has prompted a lot of changes within the brand. Power is a Mercedes-Benz attribute and Audi wants to be known for that too. So a range of engines will receive notable bumps. The current 185kW 2.0-litre TFSI will hit 195kW, S4’s 3.0-litre V6 turbo will go to 275kW, and a new 3.0-litre V6 TDI will offer 260kW. Word is, even the RS 5 will take a boost to 350kW.
