BMW South Africa has published prices of the upcoming 2 Series Coupe. The car, which replaces the discontinued boxer-like 1 Series Coupe, will be launched here in 2014 amid a flurry of new products from Munich, including the new MINI hatch, new X5, i3 electric car, M3 sedan and M4 coupe, 1 Series Gran Tourismo and 1 Series facelift among others. Sorry we don’t have pictures because the car has not been officially launched yet.
This information says the 2 Series will be launched with a 220i, a 220d and the M235i. The 220i Coupe comes with a 2.0-litre turbo engine with 135kW and 270Nm of torque, a claimed 0 – 100km/h sprint time of 7 seconds and top speed of 235km/h. Then we have the 220d which also has a 2.0-litre but in turbo diesel this time. Power and torque are 135kW and 380Nm respectively.
Lastly we have the M235i Coupe that delivers a nice 240kW of power and 450Nm of torque, putting it just 25kW shy of the new speedy Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG. BMW says the M235i can gallop off into 10km/h territory in just 4.8 seconds, ceasing acceleration at 250km/h.
Within the next 24 months we should see the successor to the brilliant 1 M Coupe, to be called the M2. Judging from current specs, that car will boost power to about 260kW. It will be the natural rival to the A45 AMG and upcoming Audi RS 3.
I’d like to say we’ll see the new BMW 2 Series at the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show (JIMS ) next week but that probably will not happen as it has not debuted in any other international motor show.
