2014 BMW M3 AND M4 ENGINE DETAILS OUT!

BMW has released approximate power figures for the eagerly-awaited pair of 2014 M3 sedan and M4 Coupe. Both cars are being launched in 2014 in markets around the globe, including Mzansi. The big news, even if it has been accurately speculated for a couple of years now, is the engine to be used. Replacing the naturally aspirated 4.0-litre V8 is a force-fed 3.0-litre straight six motor.

Blowing all the air into the 6 cylinders are two twin-scroll turbos. In the end all we are getting is 316kW and over 500Nm apparently. Disappointing I know, but we are told the main thrust of performance here was extracted via a weight-loss programme rather than more power. Remember the V8 was good for 309kW, up from 252kW in the previous 3.2-litre car. So we were expecting quite a jump from 309kW. We’ll see what the 2016 Audi RS 5 and Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG come up with, since they are already both over the 330kW mark…

Anyways, some of the weight savings have been achieved through a lighter gearbox (less 12kg), new wheel carriers (less 5kg) and a standard carbon fibre roof for both sedan and coupe versions. Around 80kg has been shaved off the V8 (E92) as a result. That doesn’t say much though, given that said E92 weighed in at 1 580kg and 1 605kg for coupe and sedan respectively. Comparatively, the 2000 model year M3 Coupe – designated E46 – weighed 1 549kg.

BMW reckons there will be significant gains in fuel consumption as a result of all this work. We hope they are right because the V8 was not known for being a fuel-sipper. The standard transmission is a 6-speed manual, while the 7-speed M-DCT can also be ordered.

The two-door 2014 M4 Coupe manual should cost upwards of R950 000 when specified with standard items, while the M-DCT version could tip the R1 million with no options ticked off.
