The all-new 2017 Volvo V90 station wagon will be officially unveiled in six days’ time. But true to its nature, the interweb has provided some leaked copies of the images depicting the car have emerged. Often these leaks are created by insiders, whether within the car company or its associated partners like the advertising agency or similar. Regardless, we are thankful for these.

Volvo has always had a strong station wagon tradition, going back to the days of the 200 model way back 1974. Even its predecessor looked good during its time in the 1960s. It looks like the V90 is continuing that tradition with the car that shares most of itself with the new S90 sedan. Judging from the exterior it looks quite a spacious vehicle from all dimensions. Our hope is that it has a deep loading boot space and not the shallow type we saw with the likes of the old V40.

The car’s interior will mimic that of the S90, which means high quality build materials, including leather, wood veneers, brushed aluminium and some chrome bits, as well as piano black in some cases. A new multimedia infotainment system with a massive touch screen will be included for the five passengers’ enjoyment.

Volvo will also pass on the S90’s powertrains into its more spacious sibling. These will include T5 (187kW), T6 (235kW), D4, D5 and perhaps also the T8 hybrid (300kW) engine used by the XC90. All these engines are based on 2.0-litre turbo architecture, including the T8. We expect it to use an 8-speed automatic gearbox, although there might be an entry-level 6-speed manual in certain markets.

We don’t yet know if the V90 will be sold in Mzansi. But given our general dislike for station wagons and the current weak state of the Rand, it might be prudent for Volvo South Africa not to include it in its sales plan for the year.
